Press Release Regarding Turkey's Ratification For The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Disabilities , 29.09.2009
On September 28, 2009, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu deposited Turkey’s Instrument of Ratification for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with the UN Legal Counsel and the Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, Ms. Patricia O’Brien, on the occasion of the Treaty Event organized at the margins of the 64th session of the UN General Assembly. At the same event, Mr. Davutoğlu also signed the Optional Protocol to the said Convention.
With the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Turkey has become party to all eight principal human rights conventions of the UN. The Convention will significantly contribute to Turkey’s efforts, coordinated by the Agency for Disabled Persons under the Prime Ministry, to promote the human rights and the status of persons with disabilities.
The ratification of the Convention and the signing of the Optional Protocol confirm yet again the importance Turkey attributes to improving and strengthening human rights.
